Even as Jailer 2 opens to positive talk, a controversy has erupted around Mohanlal’s role in the film. Costume designer Jishad Shamsudeen, who worked on Mohanlal’s looks for Jailer 2, has publicly expressed his disappointment after three of the Malayalam superstar’s looks were cut from the final version. In a strongly worded note, he announced that he will not be part of any future sequel.
What Jishad Shamsudeen Said
Sharing a note on Instagram addressed “To everyone who loves and supports me,” Jishad wrote:
“With the release of Jailer 2, I want to share an important update!! Based on what was shot, I was completely confident in our work, even when reduced to a 2-second glimpse in the trailer. But with the film’s release, three of Mohanlal Sir’s distinct looks were cut entirely, and even that trailer scene was trimmed out.”
He added: “From my experience in cinema, trimming scenes involving a superstar like Mohanlal Sir is simply unnecessary.”
“I Will Not Be a Part of It”
The strongest part of his note was his decision about the franchise. “Seeing our superstar reduced like this, if there is a Sequel, I will not be a part of it. I am truly sorry to everyone who trusted me,” he wrote.
He ended the note by making his stand clear: “I don’t stand for favors, profits, crore clubs, or stardom. I stand solely for the fans, lovers of the craft, and Mohanlal Sir. Thank you for always standing by my journey.”
Three Looks Cut, Trailer Scene Gone
According to Jishad, Mohanlal was shot in three distinct looks for Jailer 2, and all three were removed in the final cut. Even the brief moment that appeared in the trailer, which had excited fans, did not make it into the film.
For Mohanlal fans, this is a big disappointment. His cameo as Mathew in the first Jailer was one of the biggest highlights of that film, and it played a major role in its massive success in Kerala. Many fans had expected an even bigger presence in the sequel.
Why It Matters
Kerala has been one of Jailer 2’s strongest markets, with pre-sales of over ₹7 Cr in the state for its opening day alone, much of it driven by the goodwill from Mohanlal’s role in the first film. Jishad’s note is likely to spark strong reactions from Mohanlal fans, especially in Kerala, at a time when the film is riding on positive word of mouth.
No Response From the Team Yet
Director Nelson Dilipkumar and Sun Pictures have not responded to Jishad’s statement so far. Editing decisions on a film usually come down to runtime and pacing, and Jailer 2 already runs for close to 2 hours 44 minutes. It remains to be seen whether the makers will explain the decision or address the fans’ concerns.
